65th Anniversary Event Cancelled

65th Anniversary Event cancelled

China ITF Thanks the ITF HQS and the ITF NGBS for Their Concerns

Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with Xi Jinping , the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee at the core, the Chinese people are fearless of any dangers and difficulties, have shown outstanding wisdom, and have taken many active and effective measures in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 that has been raging in China for nearly three months. We firmly believe that China and the Chinese people are about to usher in a victorious, nationally celebrated and warm spring.

China ITF has been actively responding to the country’s call, convened a high-level meeting urgently, and promptly canceled the "7th China ITF Congress" scheduled to be held in February 2020, and also apply to the ATF and KTC to cancel "the 10th Asian ITF Taekwon‑Do Championships.

China ITF has always been under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) since its establishment. Although the cancellation of this international competition has caused a huge loss in economy, credibility and resources, all ITF taekwondoists in China are willing to join hands with the whole country to fight against the epidemic and contribute to the stability and prosperity of our motherland.

Since January 2020, the ITF, ATF, KTC and more than 20 countries around the world have sent letter of sympathies to China ITF, expressing greetings and blessings. The letters expressed great concern about the situation of the Chinese people against the epidemic, as well as the safety of all ITF taekwondoists in China. At the same time, they expressed affirmation and praise for the Chinese people's determination, capability and methods of fighting the epidemic. All ITF colleagues said that China has made great contributions to the world, set an example for the people in the world to fight the epidemic, and earned time for the people of the world, which deserves the respect of people all over the world.

Mr. Zhang Guangjun, president of China ITF on behalf of all ITF members in China, expressed his sincere gratitude and sincere blessings to the care of the ITF, ATF, KTC and ITF associations in various countries, and thank them for their warm greetings to China during the epidemic . At the same time, President Mr. Zhang Guangjun also extended an invitation to everyone, and welcomed everyone to have friendly exchanges with China after the epidemic. China ITF will do its best to welcome everyone.

According to statistics from the WHO, as of today, the number of confirmed cases of the COVID-19 worldwide will reach 150,000, and the number of countries and regions affected by the epidemic has exceeded 100. Although China has adopted the most comprehensive, strictest and most thorough prevention and control measures, the epidemic situation has been well controlled, but the multi-point outbreak and spread worldwide has made epidemic fighting a matter for people all over the world, and it is about everyone’s personal safety. The Chinese government has also mobilized all efforts to donate a large number of medical supplies and support funds needed for the COVID-19 outbreak to the world. At the same time, in the face of the COVID-19 as a cunning enemy, China is struggling to fight the epidemic, but also the first time to share information and carry out scientific research cooperation with other countries. A timetable is a record of China's solid efforts to fulfill its international responsibilities and join hands with the international community to combat the disease.

China ITF has been following the situation of epidemic prevention and control in the world. After learning that China's Pu'er tea can not only have very good effects on the prevention of the COVID-19, but also can help patients recover effectively, President Mr. Zhang Guangjun immediately sent emails with expressions of sympathy and support to more than 100 countries around the world, and he timely sent a certain amount of high-end Pu'er tea and disposable medical masks to the ITF HQs, ATF HQs, and the national associations that replied the delivery address to help everyone overcome the difficulties.

Among them, the Latvian ITF Association needed to go abroad to participate in the competition and asked China ITF for help. In the case of shortage of supplies, China ITF sent 200 disposable medical masks to the Latvian ITF Association for use by athletes during the competition.

Xinhua News Agency reported that on the evening of March 12, Beijing time, Chinese President Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres at his request.

The epidemic has once again demonstrated that mankind is a community with a shared future that shares weal and woe, Xi stressed, adding that in the era of economic globalization, COVID-19 will not be the world's last major emergency, and various traditional and non-traditional security issues will constantly bring about new tests. The international community has to see humanity as one community with a shared future, look out for one another, and join hands to tackle risks and challenges and build a beautiful planet, said the Chinese president.

Noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, Xi said China supports the international community in taking that as an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to multilateralism, and reinforce and improve the global governance system with the United Nations at the core.

China ITF has always believed that, with the joint efforts of people all over the world, the global COVID-19 will be controlled quickly and completely eliminated in the near future.

In the face of the epidemic, all ITF family members around the world need to stand together and unite as one, to tide over the difficulty and achieve more successes.

One Federation, One Dream.

ITF HQ LETTER ON PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AGAINST CORONAVIRUS EPIDEMIC(COVID-19)

Dear ITF Members,

In light of the increasing concern related to the evolving coronavirus outbreak, it is important that athletes and officials that are preparing for internationally sanctioned ITF events stay informed and understand how to best protect themselves from illness.

This update is informed by information collated from the World Health Organization (WHO) and includes direct extracts from previously published guidelines.

Recommendations for International Travel

Athletes may encounter travel disruption as several countries and airlines around the world implement precautionary measures, including screening and quarantine measures. Travel restrictions to/from other countries are largely the result of decisions taken by the local national public health authorities. Such measures have impacted several international sport events around the world, and athletes are encouraged to check travel advices regularly and to consult with competition organizers for specific advisories and/or decisions prior to travel.

In the interim, it is advisable to limit all non-essential travel to geographical locations at higher risk.

Prevention of Illness

In terms of managing the spread of the virus, the following principles apply:

  • The WHO does not recommend any specific measures such as isolation unless people experience any symptoms suggestive of acute respiratory illness either during or after travel;
  • Avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections;
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water for 25 seconds duration, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment and use alcohol-based hand rubs (applied to clean hands), both regularly and before meals;
  • Avoid unprotected contact with farm or wild animals;
  • People with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash their hands) and if this occurs after travel, report as soon as possible to health care practitioners.

Do not act against any travel advice from the WHO, or the relevant local authorities of the country you intend to visit.

The link is a useful YouTube video from the WHO that gives more information about the coronavirus: YouTube - Corona Viruses

As the situation continues to evolve, please refer to the local government resources for the latest updates.

Thank you for your assistance in adhering to these important guidelines.

FENIAS STANDS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 24 YEARS

Dearest Friends and Family,

We are elated with joy that we can share we have moved ahead and begun, as of this week, building Fenias prosthetic leg.
Today was however a life-changing moment for Fenias and his team, simply, Fenias stood without crutches and on two feet for the first time in his 24 years alive.
Currently, Fenias is wearing a temporary prosthetic while his custom prosthetic is in the lab being constructed over the next 7 days. In the interim, he is learning to walk on a prosthetic and attending physiotherapy as he adjusts.
This was a message shared from his prosthetic team at Harper and Kuhn Prosthetists in Johannesburg earlier. "We had a truly remarkable day today. Fenias is extremely motivated and determined. We had to pull the hand-break up a little bit to make sure he doesn’t overwork all the muscles that is now utilising while he is walking."
We will be sharing frequent updates over the next three weeks on his Facebook Page, please feel free to like, share and comment: https://www.facebook.com/thefeniasclaudioproject/.  I will also share a picture and update with Fenias and the prosthetic once it is finished.
And while the Nike T-shirt in the attached picture and video says, "Just Do it" and coincidentally applicable, we proud to say, #WE JUST DID IT!  A personal thank you for your support throughout this initiative, both Fenias, his family and all of us that worked on this initiative are eternally grateful.

Some additional news:

  • Plovdiv, Bulgaria:  Bsb Fenias Claudio will be present at the forthcoming World Championships in Plovdiv Bulgaria, and will be performing a demonstration for the opening ceremony to over 180 countries and 1000+ spectators.  This will be the first time Bsb Fenias Claudio will be travelling on a plane international.  His first was to South Africa this month for his procedure. We are deeply grateful to the International Taekwon-Do Federation for making this become a reality.
  • 05.2019:  Bsb Fenias has been nominated by the Minister of Sports in Mozambique as one of 5 candidates for the 2019 Mozambique national Sportsman of the year.

Last round of funding:

This current trip and juncture was made possible through a recent sponsorship on the balk of the prosthetic parts from Össur South Africa https://www.ossur.co.za plus the last amount raised of $5,594 (parts / labour / medical team services).  We do however still require an amount of $4,000 pertaining to travel, accommodation, pier diems, ground travel while in SA, insurance on the prosthetic leg for next three years and annual check-ups in Johannesburg for the next three years.  If you may know of a friend who would find this cause of interest, please do share the following link to the existing crowd funding page on Given Gain: https://www.givengain.com/cc/thefeniasclaudioproject/

World Taekwon-Do & International Taekwon-Do Federation

promote Peace at United Nations Office in Geneva

Lausanne Geneva ViennaClick to download

GENEVA, Switzerland (April 12, 2019) – World Taekwondo (WT) and the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) today showcased the power of taekwondo to promote peace during a joint-demonstration at the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva.

The joint-demonstration was the fourth demonstration held over the last week to mark the 25th anniversary of taekwondo being included on the Olympic Programme and to celebrate the growing collaboration between the two federations.

The UN office in Geneva (UNOG), a symbol of unity, collaboration and international peace, provided the perfect setting for the joint-demonstration, which sent out a strong message about taekwondo’s power to teach values that transcend sport.

UN Geneva Director General Michael Moller, ambassadors, diplomatic corps, board members and staff from international organizations, including the UN, watched with awe as 28 delegates from WT and 23 delegates from ITF, showcased the skill, excitement and drama of taekwondo.

The athletes performed gravity-defying kicks, spectacular board-breaking, self-defense and graceful Poomsae skills, astonishing each member of the audience.

This is the second time WT has visited the UN offices in Geneva, after an initial visit in 2016 to discuss humanitarian and peace building initiatives. The WT Demonstration Team had the honor of performing a demonstration during that visit.

Prior to the joint performance, Director General Michael Moller said:
“The performance we are now going to see is a testament to the power of sport in bringing peace and reconciliation, friendship and harmony. We are proactively looking for ways to strengthen our cooperation with international sport federations. We are doing this because we see important synergies between the work of sport federations and international organizations. Sport is an important enabler to reach out to young people worldwide and to disseminate the values enshrined in the UN Charter

WT President Chungwon Choue said:
“It is an honor to be back at the UN office here in Geneva. WT and the UN share many of the same values. It was at the UN headquarters in New York in 2015 that we first announced the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF). Since then, we have supported a number of humanitarian and peace building initiatives all around the world.

“Today was a symbolic moment for our sport as it was the first time that WT and ITF have performed together at the UN. This sent out a strong message of collaboration and peace. We have different rules, use different equipment and some of the techniques used by our athletes have diverged. But as today’s event has proven, we are moving towards unity. I would like to thank UN Geneva Director General Michael Moller, who has hosted us here today.”

WT and the UN have enjoyed a close relationship for many years, particularly in providing opportunities for refugees. Establishing the THF to empower refugees is a critical part of these efforts. At the THF’s Humanitarian Taekwondo Center, they not only teach young people taekwondo but also how to live as global citizens. WT has encouraged other International Federations to join them in providing opportunities for young people to practice sport in refugee camps around the world.

ITF President Ri Yong Son added:
“ITF have conducted joint demonstrations with WT several times in the past with the purpose to unify taekwondo. Taekwondo is the legacy and pride of mankind as it promotes people’s health and aspires for peace and justice. I hope this historic event will be the opportunity to unify taekwondo.”

This event ensures the continued development of taekwondo, reinforcing the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games legacy of peace.

Prior to this event at UNOG, a WT and ITF joint demonstrations took place at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) under the theme of “Taekwondo for Peace.”

Zhao Houlin, ITU Secretary General said:
“The ancient taekwondo teaches respect, commitment, responsibility and perseverance. These values lie at the heart of the United Nations Charter. Like sport, information and communication technology is an important tool for development and for peace. Both promote understanding and cooperation, and we need this now more than ever.”

The joint WT-ITF demonstrations of the past week began on 5 April in Vienna, Austria where the ITF headquarters is located. The next demonstration took place on 11 April at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne in cooperation with IOC President Thomas Bach before today’s demonstrations capped off the celebrations.

World Taekwon-Do delegation heading to North Korea to discuss cooperation
Taekwon-Do Delegation

A World Taekwondo (WT) delegation left Seoul for Pyongyang on Tuesday to stage a taekwondo demonstration performance and discuss issues of cooperation with North Koreans.

The 49-member delegation, led by WT President Choue Chung-won, will arrive in Pyongyang via Beijing. The delegation will stay in Pyongyang until Saturday after receiving an invitation from the North Korean-led International Taekwondo Federation (ITF).

The delegation includes a demonstration team that is comprised of 18 South Korean taekwondo practitioners and four coaching and supporting staff members. They will have an exclusive one-hour performance at Taekwondo Hall in Pyongyang on Wednesday and will showcase a joint performance with the ITF demonstration team Friday.

This is the first time since April that the Seoul-based WT demonstration team is having a performance in the North Korean capital. That month, the demonstration team visited Pyongyang with a South Korean art troupe and also performed twice.

The delegation also has five foreigners, including WT Secretary General Hoss Rafaty.

WT hopes the Pyongyang visit can further strengthen its cooperation with ITF. In April, WT executive members weren't able to make the Pyongyang trip due to schedule reasons, but this time, WT chief Choue will lead the discussions.

"We are very happy that WT can perform again in Pyongyang," Choue said at Gimpo International Airport in Seoul. "Through this taekwondo demonstration performance, I hope we can contribute to the development of the inter-Korean relations." (Yonhap)
